Welcome!

My name is Beth, and this blog about my adventures in making art and healing my soul. Discovering mixed media art lead directly to my complete recovery from a seventeen year battle with disordered eating.

On November 18, 2011, the Best Husband Ever learned that our first child, Eve, had died at 31 weeks of pregnancy. She was stillborn two days later. My hope is that God will again use art to help me heal, this time from an unimaginable loss. I blog more about grief and healing on my other blog, here.

Superpowered

finished!

Yesterday I finally finished first assignment for Life Book!  I kept putting it off and putting it off because I was afraid that it wouldn't be perfect.

Perfectionism, you say?  Yeah, that again.

But yesterday I decided to put an end to my waffling.  If I can't take the risk to be un-perfect, how can I ever expect to mature and grow -- not only as an artist, but as a person?  So I shoved my ego aside and went to work.

I can't tell you how glad am I that I did.  And really, although this creation is not technically perfect, it's perfect for me.  I just love it.

The assignment was to create a page that showcased our positive qualities -- or, as Tam put it, our "goddess superpowers."  I altered the assignment to fit with my own beliefs, and so I instead reflected upon a few of the many gifts I have received from God.
Here's how it transformed along the way:

  4. I love how this whole piece looks - and what a nice way to showcase and remind oneself of the things God has placed within...blue hair!? Reminds me of Jane DesRosier; is she the one teaching this piece? I didn't join Lifebook, but I loved its concept. Many blessings as your work your way through this class!

  5. Thanks, everyone!

Cindy, I think Jane *is* teaching a workshop in Life Book, but this one was taught by Tam Laporte (Willowing).

  6. This is very beautiful, Beth. She does look sad, though, and full of soul.

    1. Thanks, Carola. I'm glad she's wearing some heavier emotions on her face -- that's what I wanted, to reflect my life. After all, it is *my* Life Book I'm putting together. :)

  7. An art piece showing your gifts from God... I LOVE it! It is beautiful. And the perfectionism thing... I am working on that this year! lol Did you happen to see my post, http://studiojru.com/2012/01/18/embracing-imperfection? If you read through the comments you will see we are definitely not alone when it comes to struggling with perfectionism! :)

  8. Hi Beth. Your portrait is wonderful! I am in Life Book too and I have to tell you that I did the EXACT same thing. Yes, perfectionists please raise your hand. :) I also changed mine to the gifts God has given me too. Looking forward to seeing more and hoping your art is giving you some comfort.
